In this historical thriller set in the summer of 1915, Elizabeth Hand introduces us to her adolescent heroine, Pin, who lives with her mother amongst the carnies and grifters of Chicago’s Riverview Amusement Park. When Pin thinks she’s witnessed the lead-up to a murder in the park, she begins her own investigations parallel to those conducted by the authorities, but being a young woman she is dismissed somewhat by people who should know better. This is an engrossing and beautifully written novel and one of the best of the class of 2019. Read our full review here.
