The publishing schedule gets busy in March and our first news report of the month has five interesting novels to entice you. We get the ball rolling with Patrick Hoffman’s Friends Helping Friends – what a great title. We’ve also got crime fiction from Switzerland and three big American cities – New York, LA and Chicago.
Friends Helping Friends by Patrick Hoffman

Hunkeler’s Secret by Hansjörg Schneider

We’ve reached book four in Hansjörg Schneider‘s Inspector Hunkeler series, and our hero is a bit under the weather. In fact, he’s in hospital and sharing a room with Stephan Fankhauser, an old acquaintance terminally ill with cancer. So probably no big shock that one day he is found dead – except retired Swiss police inspector Hunkeler has a hazy memory of a young nurse with a ruby ring on her hand administering an injection to his friend in the middle of the night. There is no post mortem and Fankhauser is given a swift cremation, but that won’t stop Hunkeler getting to the bottom of things, much to the annoyance of his former colleagues. Translated by Astrid Freuler, Hunkeler’s Secret is out on 20 March.

Dirty Little War by Dietrich Kalteis

Let’s head to 1920s Prohibition-era Chicago for Dirty Little War by Dietrich Kalteis, out on 18 March. That’s where young Huckabee Waller heads after he finds himself involved in the death of a gangster in his hometown of New Orleans. It’s maybe a strange choice of destination, given that Chicago is the epicentre of crime and corruption, and Huck is pulled into the darkness when he comes up empty in his search for honest work. Instead, he gets mixed up in bare-knuckle fights and is soon a firm favourite with the crowds who flock to bet on the illegal sport. But Huck wants more, and his greed could lead him into big, big trouble.

The Ten Worst People in New York by Matt Plass

After a late-night talk show turns the spotlight on the 10 baddest folk in the Big Apple, things begin to happen. A bad guy real estate mogul featured on the list jumps to his death, and then a corrupt NYC councillor also dies in suspicious circumstances. Coincidence? Not in the opinion of recently widowed FBI agent Alex Bedford, who wants to catch a killer before they strike again. And when British film maker Jacob Felle finds himself in the wrong place at the wrong time – and suspected of committing the murders – he and Alex collide, and must work together to get to the truth. The Ten Worst People in New York by Matt Plass is published on 18 March.
