September marks a turning point in the year. Summer is in its twilight, the leaves will soon be turning, a new academic year begins, and we begin to think of warm, indoor pursuits. Top among them for us is getting back to some classic crime fiction. While autumn sees the world’s publishers releasing their big new books for the upcoming Christmas market, we like to browse our libraries looking at the great crime tomes of yesteryear, and re-read our favourites. And so, here on Crime Fiction Lover, we run a month devoted to the classics every September.

The classics we’ll feature
The excitement continues with the line-up of features and reviews planned for the coming month. We’ll be digging up lost gems of the Golden Age, picking the best books by Ngaio Marsh bookshelf, and having a close-up look at some classics including The Day of the Jackal, Rogue Male and The Quiller Memorandum. The team are working on a listing of the greatest classic crime films of all time, and for those who enjoy interactive mysteries we’re lining up a feature on the best classic crime games for iPad. From Ed McBain’s 87th Precinct through to Sophie Hannah’s upcoming Poirot novel – and plenty more – it’s going to be a month to remember.

This year, four authors who read our site are also joining in. Rachel Howzell Hall, TJ Cooke, Cathy Ace and Arne Dahl all write in very different sub-genres of crime fiction and they’ll be here sharing their favourite classics – books that have inspired them and helped them become better writers. And, to cap it all off, we even have a book involving cricket – The Amazing Test Match Mystery takes us all the way back to 1938.
