On the radar — This week’s report features a welcome return by Hope Road author John Barlow, a collection of spine-chilling short stories from a fantastic group of up-and-coming crime writers, and two rather interesting debuts.
Father and Son by John Barlow
Back in January last year, we reviewed John Barlow’s crime fiction debut, Hope Road. That novel introduced readers to John Ray, the Cambridge educated son of an established crime boss who is trying to sever his gangland ties and lead a normal life. Father and Son sees him investigating the seemingly motiveless murder of one of his father’s old associates. There’s only one problem hampering this case – nobody wants to talk to the police. Sounds like the perfect investigation for John to be involved in. After all, he’s a man with a foot in both camps. Going by the title it could be a great one for Father’s Day on Sunday and it’s only £1.74 on Kindle at the moment.

Tomorrow City by Kirk Kjeldsen

Now he is making his crime fiction debut with the financial thriller Midas, using the pen-name Dominic Ranger. Alan Marks, newly bankrupt and recently separated, discovers he has access to limitless amounts of money when he inserts his bank card into the local ATM machine in Farborough, Hampshire. The first question is: where’s it coming from? The second: does he care? Top fraud investigator Garry MacAllister works at the bank’s head office and he’s just made a nightmare discovery – a Midas scheme has been activated. Money is being taken out but the bank has no means of tracking what accounts it’s coming from nor who is behind the scam.
