Crime fiction lovers who enjoy pace, momentum and impact should keep an eye out for On the Trail by Kerry J Donovan, out 15 January from Vinci Books.
This is the 14th novel in the author’s Ryan Kaine series, wherein our eponymous hero takes on anyone who stands in the way of justice, driven by both his principles and his past. Way back in book one, On the Run, Kaine was duped into shooting down a commercial airliner with 83 people on board, and then nearly killed by his former employers, the police and other parties intent on keeping the whole thing undercover. Furious and bereft, Kaine swore to protect the families of those aboard the jet.
Wind ahead to On the Trail, and one of those families is in difficulties. A woman has been killed – seemingly in an accident – and her husband is being blamed by the police. However, Kaine finds there’s more to it than that and in fact an organised crime family is behind this. And the killing isn’t over. So he steps in to protect the husband and the woman’s two children from what’s coming.
Kerry J Donovan’s high-octane style of writing appeals to fans of the Jack Reacher series by Lee Child, but in fact this Irish-born author has become a widely recognised author in his own right, with sales reaching over half a million so far. If you read our review of On the Run, you’ll know he’ knows just how to craft an expert when it comes to crafting an action thriller and hooking readers into its trajectory. Readers also love Kaine’s back story and training in the Special Boat Service, the Royal Navy’s elite attack unit.
