Steph Cha’s multiple-award-nominated novel is very much of the moment. By giving an intimate view of two Los Angeles cultures and the decades-long friction between them, her story explores the complexities of racism, injustice and revenge from the microcosm of two families – one black and one Korean. Neither can escape the long tail of past events or situations where good intentions don’t count. Cha’s narrators of alternating chapters are Grace Park, a young Korean American woman whose parents harbour a terrible secret, and Shawn Matthews, an African American man working to make something of himself.
