After two successful runs making the world of finance and investment a dangerous place, the Danish programme Follow the Money is returning to BBC Four. But, like one of its main characters, the show has had a makeover. Mergers and buy-outs with assassins lingering on the fringes are being replaced with a deep dive into organised crime and gangs operating as street level. Some would argue there isn’t much difference.
The official air date is Saturday 6 April at 9pm and this time the focus is on Nicky Rasmussen (Esben Smed). The young auto mechanic, who was always game for a bit of casual kidnapping and extortion, is now a force to be reckoned with in the Copenhagen underworld. You’ll barely recognise him with his slick new hairstyle and clothing.
Working counter to Nicky’s nefarious activities is the police detective Alf, played by Thomas Hwan. He seems to be without his fraud squad colleague Mads Justesen and his new assignment is to investigate gangland crime. Meanwhile, a new character will appear in the form of Anna Berg Hansen (Maria Rich) who is a bank employee and a target for criminal activity. The show was shot in the heart of Copenhagen’s Norrebro district, with its dark alleys and cold cellars. Drugs, guns, money and violence are on the way…
Although the show is still titled Follow the Money, and had the same Danish title of Bedrag when it aired there in January, its makers are referring to it as a spin-off because the focus has shifted so dramatically from fraud to criminal gangs.
