Surf noir’s up, brah! No Exit Press has reprinted Kem Nunn’s classic California coming of age novel and although it first came out in 1983 we can’t keep it off our Recommended list. This is a must-read piece of American literature, which sees 17-year-old Ike leave his deadbeat town in the desert and head to Huntington Beach – aka Surf City USA – to look for three surfers he believes abducted his sister, whom he loves deeply. Penetrating his way into surf culture he finds there’s a very dark side to this bright and sunny town, involving bikers, drugs, pornography and broken lives. Read the full review here.
