Natchez Burning

Natchez Burning

This is a giant of a book in length, moral stature, and the  sheer intensity of the writing. Penn Cage is a lawyer-turned-politician in Natchez, Mississipi – a small town with a big history. As the ghosts of the paddle steamers chug silently by on the river below the bluffs, the town wrestles with an uneasy past of racist violence, and Cage is drawn into a case which involves decades-old wrongdoings and wanton brutality. When he realises that his own father – a much loved retired doctor – is involved, Cage’s search for justice seems likely to bring his world crashing down around him. Our full review is here.
