Take Peter James’ secret tour of Brighton

BrightonpavilionThe outgoing Crime Writers Association chair Peter James is set to launch a new website in collaboration with Brighton’s tourist board that promotes both his books, and the city in which they are set. To mark the launch, a special tour and competition is being held in Brighton this Saturday – 22 June. It co-incides with the release of James’ latest novel Dead Man’s Time.

Head to the grand clock in the railway station for 9am on Saturday, and you can join Peter James’ Secret Brighton tour. And there’s a challenge for sleuthing-minded crime fiction lovers too. Find all clues along the way and enter them at this web page set up by Pan Macmillan, and you’ll be entered into a prize draw or get local discount codes. There’s even the chance to win a helicopter ride over Brighton. The grand prize is 10 pairs of tickets to meet the author at an exclusive event held in the Mayor’s Parlour. Afterwards, you’ll go on a tour of the City Police Cells Museum with Peter James.

At the website Peter James’ Brighton, you’ll find interactive maps and details of his Secret Walk, as well as three other on-foot tours of the city. One covers the crime scenes featured in his DS Roy Grace series, another focuses on places relevant to the character himself, and the final one takes in Brighton’s other main attractions. From the Promenade and the piers, to the city’s Victorian sewers and old police cells, and on to the railway station and the Pavilion, each has a quote from one of the Roy Grace books. If you’re a fan of the author you can tap into the special significance of these real-world landmarks in his fictional crime fiction stories.

Peter James’ books include Dead Simple, Dead Man’s Footsteps and Not Dead Yet. The latter has been on the Crime Fiction Lover recommended list since December, when our contributor Lucy chose it has her top crime fiction book of 2012. Even if you can’t attend on Saturday, the website will be available and the tours can be followed at any time throughout the summer.
