For our non-UK fans, the BBC’s Time Shift is an excellent documentary series that runs on BBC4.
The last two programmes in the series have tackled some of our favourite topics; Nordic Noir: The Story of Scandinavian Crime Fiction; and Italian Noir, about… well, you guessed it, Italian crime fiction.
Both are fantastic, featuring interviews with some of the very finest crime fiction writers from each niche, and tracing the influences and ripple effects caused by the real blockbusters of the genre.
In the Nordic episode, Time Shift looks at Mankell’s Wallander, The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, and includes segments on Jo Nesbo and Karin Fossum.
The Italian episode features the likes of Andrea Camilleri (creator of the Inspector Montablano Mysteries), Giancarlo De Cataldo (Romanzo Criminale), and Carlo Lucarelli and Barbara Baraldi.
Sadly, the BBC’s iPlayer catch-up series is only available via paid-for iPad app in the following countries: Austria, Belgium, France, Germany, Italy, Luxembourg, The Republic of Ireland, The Netherlands, Portugal, Spain and Switzerland.
